Students of the University of Abuja on Monday blocked the ever-busy International Airport Road, protesting against the death of a 200-Level student in the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies, Simi Boyi.
The deceased was said to have been knocked down on Sunday night by a fast moving vehicle while fleeing from some hoodlums who had accosted her shortly after alighting from a commercial vehicle coming from Abuja city centre.
The incident was said to be the seventh in recent times, the students said, was no longer acceptable.
They demanded that the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Micheal Adikwu, and other members of management should take concrete action to secure the lives of the students.
The President of University of ABUJA Students Union Government, Abdullazeez Ajiboye, who led the protesters, also expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of interest displayed by the institution’s authorities towards the security of students.
According to him, students cannot continue to die on account of insecurity in the school, adding that the school management must overhaul the security system in UNIABUJA to secure lives and properties.
As early as 6:30 am, the students came out and disrupted the free flow of traffic on the highway, as they carried placards with different inscriptions, demanding improvement in infrastructural decay in the school.
They demanded, among other things, speed breakers, street lights, Police post, rehabilitation of student hostels and immediate sack of the Chief Security Officer of the school over alleged incompetence.
