The Governing Council of the University of Abuja has approved the appointment of two deputies vice chancellors for Academic and Administration.
They are Prof Edmund Joseph Nwana and Prof Muhammadu Abdullahi Katcha respectively.
The Senate of the University elected both at its 163rd regular sitting held on Wednesday, 25th January 2017.
Registrar and Secretary to Council of the University, Mrs Rifkatu Hoshen Swanta, said in a statement that the Senate’s election of the two deputy VCs was approved at the 43rd Extra-ordinary meeting of the Governing Council, which held on Wednesday, 1st February 2017.
She further informed that the appointments are effective from today, February 7, 2017 for a period of two years in the first instance.
Prof Edmund Joseph Nwana was born in Awka on 25th October 1958, and was until his appointment the Dean, Postgraduate School of the University. A 1982 graduate of medicine from the University of Ibadan, Prof Nwana started his working career as Senior House Officer, Department of Pathology, University of Jos Teaching Hospital and had served as Senior Registrar/Chief Resident of the department.
He was Associate Lecturer Department of Pathology/Haematology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Jos from 1991 to 1993; Head of the Department in 1995 and Senior Lecturer/Consultant from 1997-1999, during which time he was also lecturer in Basic Forensic Pathology/Investigation at the Nigerian Police College, Jos.
Prof Nwana was pioneer Head of Department of Pathology, National Hospital Abuja between 1999 and 2004 and was Professor and Head of Department of Pathology College of Medicine, University of Ilorin, from where he joined the service of the University of Abuja in January 2008 as Professor of Pathology, College of Health Sciences, as well as Foundation Dean, Faculty of Basic Clinical Science and the Faculty of Clinical Sciences.
Prof Abdullahi Katcha was born on 5th January 1959 in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger state. He graduated from Usman Danfodio University (UDUS), Sokoto in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education (Biology) and holds a Master of Science degree in education from the University of Jos (1993) and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Science Education (2006) from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
Professor Katcha started his working career in 1984 with the Ministry of Education, Minna, Niger state as an Integrated Science and Biology teacher where he taught till 1992. He also served as a Biology teacher in the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Abuja between 1993 and 1996. He joined the service of the University of Abuja as Lecturer II in 1996 and rose to the rank of Professor in 2006.
